ADVENTURES OF THE DAY
Sawadee Pee Mai (Happy New Year) to all Thailand readers.
After a quiet morning which was much needed for Mandy to rest her leg (Knee a bit in-flamed), they decided they couldn’t miss out on the festivities of the Thailand New Year. They would venture out and pop in by BB Cafe to try their Turkish Pide.
Matt (their fellow TEFL mate, whom they had met the day before), decided to join them. All started walking towards the main road, Matt camera over the shoulder, was advised by a rather drenched guest on his way back to the hotel, that it wasn’t a good idea to walk around with such an expensive camera on “Songkran”. Matt took the advice and returned his camera to his room.
They got no further than the entrance to the main road before a bunch of happy jovial festival participants from the Orchid Restaurant, (thinking the three were far too dry), armed with buckets and water guns, doused all with water. (Mandy’s neatly blow dried hair included).
Rather drenched, Matt loving it as he was taking strain with the heat, (from Canada and being accustomed to temperatures of -85’C ), they made their way up Moo Road.
Great wet fun was being had by all. There was screeching and laughter from festival makers, whether on the street or passing by in the traffic, as they were being drenched with water and sprayed with powder.
The TEFL threesome, were fortunate to have dried off a bit before arriving at BB Cafe, where they ordered Leo beer (Sprite for Mandy to make a Shandy), Pizza for Matt and a Turkish Pide to share for Richard and Mandy. While waiting for their meal to arrive, Matt who was still trying to adapt to the heat and humidity, decided he was better off in the street getting doused with water. Armed with a water gun from the restaurant he went outside to face his water rivals.
While enjoying their tasty Pizza’s a bit later, they were joined by a rather drenched, new TEFL arrival, Nicole Jago (from New Zealand). After spending some time getting to know each other, they decided to brave the streets once again and go for a walk on the beach. They paid their bill, thanked the owner for the awesome fare and proceeded to leave, only to be thanked for their patronage by the owner’s Turkish husband, armed with a hose pipe, who proceeded to spray all four from head to toe. The gesture was returned when Matt lifted a barrel full of water and dunked the entire contents over the Turkish owners head. All taken in good festival humor. Pity they could not take any photographs of all the water games and festivities, as all phones were tightly secured in waterproof pouches in their bags.
They made their way down Moo Road and once again at the entrance to the hotel, they met up with another jovial group who also thought they were far to dry. Richard and Matt also receiving their first “powder”dousing. Once in the safety of the hotel grounds, Mandy was able to get to her phone out to take a photograph of the rather wet but happy TEFL students.
They made their way down to the beach. walked along the beach front and over the sand bank to the uninhabited islands of Koh Fan Yai & Koh Fan Noi, while chatting and getting to know each other a little better.
Since Mandy and Richard’s last visit to the island, Richard had done some research and although both islands appear to be deserted at present, they were possibly inhabited before.
After bidding good bye to Matt and Nicole, Richard and Mandy went for a much needed swim before going back to their hotel room for a chilled relaxed evening.
Mandy made a quick Tom Yum Soup experimenting with various mushrooms and Mung Bean noodles, that she had never cooked with before. The Tom Yum soup was very, very tasty.
After supper, a very brave Mandy, concerned about the inflammation developing, doctored her knee by pouring surgical alcohol on the wound. Many swear words later, with a clean dry wound, it was time to call it a night.
Both looking forward to their planned outing to Chaweng Beach the following day with their TEFL class mates.
A blessed Easter to our beloved children, family and friends back in SA. For those going away, travel safely. And for those going to Ceres for Easter, have a drink at plot 205 for us!
