Download and install the Zoom Desktop Client software from www.zoom.com. Create a Zoom account (it’s free). To sign up for your own free account, visit the Zoom sign-up page and enter your email address. You will receive an email from Zoom (no-reply@zoom.us). In this email, click Activate Account.
Open the Zoom Desktop Client software and sign into your account.
That’s all you need to do. In most cases Zoom will not need any further changes. To find out more about changing settings or testing your Zoom installation, go to Zoom Settings and Testing Zoom.
Zoom settings and testing Zoom
To see or change your Zoom software settings, click on the round cog-shaped icon in the top right of the main screen.
Here you can find all the Zoom settings.
The most important ones are the Audio and Video settings. This is also where you can test your Audio and Video before class.
Zoom automatically uses the Audio settings of your laptop or smart device but if you want to make sure Zoom is using the correct Audio settings, click on Audio to check and to test your headphones or speakers and microphone.
The Zoom website has a detailed guide for all the other settings, if you are interested.
Joining a class
Before each class you will receive an automated email with the Zoom Meeting link and the Zoom Meeting ID and Passcode for the meeting / class. I will also send you an email confirming this information
If you do not receive your Zoom Meeting link, please email me.
Make sure that you have the Zoom Desktop Client open.
In the email, click on the link under “Join Zoom Meeting”.
This will launch the Zoom Desktop Client and you will see a pop-up window “Please wait for the host to start this meeting.”.
Once I start the meeting you will automatically join.
If you have problems joining class using the Zoom Meeting link
If you have problems joining the meeting using the link, you can join the meeting by clicking on the “Join” button in the main Zoom Desktop Client window.
Copy the Zoom Meeting ID from the email and paste it into the top field and click “Join”.
In the next window you will be prompted to enter the meeting passcode. Copy this from the email and paste it into the passcode window and click “Join”.
You will see a pop-up window “Please wait for the host to start this meeting.”.
Once I start the meeting, you will automatically join.
Using the Preparation Pack
If you would like to download a sample Preparation Pack, click here.
Save the Preparation Pack for each lesson and print it if you want to. (you only need to print the colouring pages and puzzle pages if you don’t want to print the entire document).
Save the Preparation Packs in a file and build up a full written English program, which can be referred to when needed.
Check the Preparation Pack before the class in case there is something your child needs to prepare before class.
It would be advisable to read through the Preparation Pack with your child before class so they are familiar with the lesson topic and vocabulary to be introduced.
The colouring pages, puzzles and worksheets that are included in the Preparation Packs are a great way to prepare your child for their upcoming class.
Connection problems before or during class
Try the following.
Exit the class and enter the class again.
Shut down the Zoom Desktop Client, open it again and rejoin the class.
Check your internet connection and make sure that your device is close to the WiFi hotspot (if you are using WiFi).
If you are experiencing audio problems check your device audio settings, or if you are using a headset test that the headset is working properly.
