ADVENTURES OF THE DAY
It was a rather lazy morning for the two, except for a bit of cleaning and tidying up in their room while listening to their new favourite music genre, Thai Reggae. The day was indeed relatively uneventful until Richard . . . . . . (keep reading).
The relaxing mood got the better of Richard, who drifted off to sleep while Mandy was cleaning her knee as she had finally agreed to a visit to the pharmacist.
They left the hotel much later than planned. It was a beautiful warm and balmy tropical island afternoon and after the much needed visit to the pharmacist, the two were looking forward to some excitement. Mandy had let their classmates know that cocktails at the Lucky Shaker Bar would probably feature later on.
At the pharmacy, and after a few language barrier misses, the helpful pharmacist lady recommended a course of antibiotic tablets, a wound cleansing solution and a strong disinfectant antibiotic ointment. Waterproof plasters were also strongly advised as swimming in the sea with an open wound was a no-no. (confirming what Emma from the Bob Bar had advised – apparently although salt water is good there is a high content of coral in the water which is not good).
With almost 1000 Baht worth of medical supplies in hand, they meandered off to the Lucky Shaker Bar in time for Happy Hour. Most bars’ Happy Hours along Moo Road are from 5pm to 11pm with cocktails almost half-price.
Sitting at a table on a small balcony overlooking the busy late afternoon Saturday road, the two enjoyed a cocktail and chatted and made plans for the next day. Being a Sunday they felt another exploratory scooter trip would be in order as this would be their last Sunday before “going back to school”. (Plans would later change as Richard……… read on).
While sipping on their second cocktail, their latest classmate arrival, Josh Sutterfield from Missouri USA) arrived to join them. After swapping history and stories and getting to know each other a bit better, they decided that food was in order as all were feeling a bit hungry.
They made their way to the Little Kitchen restaurant located next to the SAMUI TEFL Training Centre, where Mandy and Richard had enjoyed a great meal previously.
The friendly, gracious hosts welcomed the hungry three into the homely atmosphere. After scanning the menu, they made their choices along with Leo Beer and a Sprite for Mandy’s Shandy.
With the sound of the food being prepared in the background they chatted some more. The food arrived and the meal was delicious, in that magical way that only genuinely home-made Thai food can be. After this satisfying meal, it was time to make their way back to the hotel.
Before continuing, it is important to provide a brief description of the sidewalks found along some of the roads of Koh Samui so that our readers have an understanding of the event which is to follow. Please bear this in mind as you follow Richard, Mandy and Josh on their way back to the main road.
Sidewalks alongside the roads are in places smooth, in other places a bit rough and ready, and yet in other places non-existent or quite high. The height between the road and the sidewalk can be as little as zero centimeters to as much as 40 centimeters. Not all the side streets are brightly lit. With this in mind, try and picture the event to follow……
See how the sidewalk narrows ahead of the three. Note how Josh ducks around a small tree ahead. Picture Richard, as he decides to rather step out onto the road to avoid the tree (not realizing the height of the pavement). And then, picture Richard as his right foot (encased in his trusty Haviana sandal) meets with open air instead of the road surface. Can you picture the utmost surprise, as he finds himself failing levitation lesson #101 and making a sliding, scraping, rolling “getting to know you” greeting with the road below. See Mandy, one second walking alongside her man, the next .. . . . . Yes you have guessed correctly, Richard’s tumble number 3 (This time without a scooter).
Mandy in utter disbelief (could this actually be happening), stepped down to help him up, checking for cuts and scraps, the prognosis not too bad, but a visible Thailand Tattoo on his left knee. Really! Well at least they were armed with enough medication from their earlier visit to the Pharmacy.
Walking on behind Josh, the two could not ignore the humorous side of it all and kept breaking out into uncontrollable fits of giggles and peals of laughter. (Josh, silently walking ahead of them. Not sure what this young man must have been thinking).
What was the Universe trying to tell these two. I mean really! Another Thailand Tattoo and this time without the help of Scootie!
They eventually made it back to the hotel, still laughing in disbelief.
What a logistical nightmare it was to get into bed later. Both with their opposite medicated legs, having to be out from under the sheets. Laughing having subsided and not finding the situation funny anymore, they eventually drifted off to sleep on their second last night before “going back to school” for much needed rest.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY
Today would have truly been an uneventful, chilled and relaxing day but thanks to Richard, a bit of drama to make for more interesting reading.
